The name is derived from legend in Iyo surrounding the sakura (cherry blossoms) of the Saihoji Temple. Back in the Tenpyo era (middle of the 700s), when Emperor Tenmu stayed in Dogo Onsen, the Empress was cured by the Saihoji Temple of Iyo-led prayer. The Emperor, in token of gratitude, presented the temple with a sakura with a letter in usuzumi (thin black ink).
